The aims of SMILES

1. Reveal the new feature of the middle atmosphere

SMILES observed the atmospheric compositions with a high precision. Imagine, if you have 10 times higher resolution camera to take your picture! This new instrument opens the new feature of the middle atmosphere in our planet Earth.

2. Contribution to the knowledge of climate change

The water vapor, ice clouds, ozone, and HCl isotopes are simultaneously observed in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere to acquire a deeper understanding of UT/LS exchange processes, and heterogeneous reactions on ice cloud.

The precision and altitude ranges of compositions observed by SMILES

The figure below shows the precisions and altitude ranges of compositions observed by SMILES. The diurnal changes in 16 compositions are continuously observed on a global scale over a wide altitude range. O3 and HCl are detected theoretically within an error of a few percent. The diurnal change in ClO、BrO、HO2, HOCl and other short-life substances, for which observation was previously considered difficult, are now detected with an error margin of 20 to 30%. It is also interesting to detect diurnal change of humidity and ice cloud in the upper troposphere. CH3CN observation will allow us to study the influence of the forest fire on the upper troposphere.
